Endometriosis
What is Endometriosis?
The formation of the lining of the uterus (endometrium), which should normally be found in the inner layer of the uterus, outside the uterus (for example, in the abdominal cavity, ovaries, or anywhere in the body) is called endometriosis.
If this endometrial tissue, which should be in the uterus and thicken after the menstrual period and enable the baby to settle, is found in the ovaries, it also causes menstrual-like bleeding. Bleeding in the ovaries cannot be expelled from the body and accumulates and forms chocolate cysts. With the effect of bleeding, there is a possibility of adhesion and damage to other organs (intestines, urinary bladder) over time.
What are the symptoms of endometriosis?
- Among the symptoms of the chocolate cyst, the most common symptom is groin pain, which usually occurs during menstrual periods. Pain is seen in 60-70% of endometriosis patients.
- Pain during menstrual periods: The cramps that start before the menstrual bleeding continue for a few days. Back and abdominal pain may also be seen.
- Pain during intercourse: Pain occurs during or after intercourse.
- Pain during urination: Pain during urination, becomes more pronounced during menstrual periods
- Excessive bleeding: Excessive bleeding during menstrual periods or abnormal bleeding between periods
- Infertility: Endometriosis is often first diagnosed in those who seek medical attention for infertility.
- Feeling of tiredness: Increased fatigue during menstrual periods, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, nausea
How Is Endometriosis Treated?
Endometriosis can be treated with medications or surgery. Sometimes both medications and surgical treatment may be necessary. The aim of treatments such as drug therapy or surgical method in the Treatment of Endometriosis is to relieve severe pain and to end infertility, if any, and ensure that the woman becomes pregnant.
